First concrete poured at Shin HANUL NPP Unit 2

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has poured the first concrete at Shin Hanul 2 (formerly known as Ulchin). The project is the second project to be designed around a Korean-designed reactor, the APR-1400.

The power plant is located in Gyeongsangbuk-do province. There are currently six pressurized water reactors in operation at Hanul, with a total installed capacity of 5,881 megawatts.

Concrete was initially poured for the first unit in July 2012, which is scheduled to be commissioned in April 2017. The second unit will follow about one year later, according to KHNP. Two additional units have been planned at Shin Hanul as well.

The Shin Hanul reactors are the second pair of APR-1400s; the first pair are under construction at Shin Kori.
