Korea becomes self-sufficient in nuclear power technology
Doosan Heavy Industries, leading builder of power plants, has completed Man-Machine Interface System (MMIS)

Korea is now completely independent in nuclear power plant-related technologies. This feat has been accomplished after 30 years of efforts since the opening of its first Nuclear Power Plant in 1978.

Doosan Heavy Industries held a demonstration session for the Nuclear Power Plant Man Machine Interface System (MMIS) on May 22 with 100-plus people attending.

With successful technology development, the company is expected to harvest about 100 billion won worth of import substitution effect per each unit of nuclear power plant. This also means that the company will be able to export nuclear power plants in their entirety, now that it can provide relevant total solutions.

All of the 20 units of nuclear power plants built in Korea over the past 30 years relied on technologies provided by foreign-based companies. Even when exporting core devices, including reactors, they had to rely on foreign-based companies for the MMIS technology.

Commenting on the event, Doosan heavy Industries Vice President said, "With the last major stumbling block finally cleared, it will be possible for us to export nuclear power plants without depending on others¡¯ help. We will now focus on securing the reliability of our own technology and then start looking for export markets."

MMIS is, as it were, a nuclear power plant¡¯s brain and neural system. It supervises the general status of a nuclear power plant, controlling and protecting it. At present, only the U.S., France and Canada have the core technology and MMIS had been the last hurdle to clear before achieving Korea¡¯s aim to accomplish complete independence in Nuclear Power Plant technology.
