As the execution plan for the Electric Power Supply Site Development Project of Shin-Kori reactor units 5 and 6 has been approved from the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, its construction work has now begun.

On January 10, there was a previous agreement made on local support project between local residents of the construction site-to-be, Ulju-gun and KHNP. Then Ulju-gun requested the construction license of Shin-Kori reactor units 5 and 6 to MOTIE on January 14 with an approval from the township council. According to this request, MOTIE said, “Based on the Electric Power Supply Site Development Promotion Act, the construction project of Shin-Kori reactor units 5 and 6 will be approved with an agreement between 11 central administration organizations and local government, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. After thorough review by Electric Power Supply Site Development Promotion Committee on January 23, it will be finally approved. ”

It will take six years and five months, from this September to December 2020, to complete the construction of Shin-Kori PLWR (pressurized light water reactor) units 5 and 6 with a capacity 1,400MW, taking 2.75 million square meters of area near the existing Shin-Kori reactor units 3 and 4. Also, 7,616.8 billion won of construction cost in total will be put into this mega-project.

As this project has now commenced, it is expected to not only contribute to create job opportunities but also to vitalize stagnant regional economy.
