The 16th Meeting of the Republic of Korea-Russian Federation Joint Coordinating Committee on Atomic Energy Cooperation (JCCAEC) held in Moscow
- Agreed to cooperate in six newly suggested agendas including sodium cooled fast reactor technology development.

The 16th Meeting of the Republic of Korea-Russian Federation Joint Coordinating Committee on Atomic Energy Cooperation (JCCAEC) held in Moscow, Russia from August 19th to 20th.

Korea Delegation, headed by Dr. Moon Hai-Joo, Director General of Space and Nuclear Technology Bureau of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning(MSIP), consisted of a dozen of experts from special organizations such as Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, National Fusion Research Institute and Korea International Cooperation Foundation took part in the meeting. For Russian side, led by Dr. Vyacheslav Pershukov, Deputy Director General for Scientific and Technical Complex State Atomic Energy Corporation(Rosatom), related organizations such as Institute of Biomedical Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences (IMBP), Safety Institute of Atomic Energy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBRAE RAN), FSUE “SSC RF-IPPE”, Kurchatov Institute, Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics (JINR) attended the meeting.

In this session, the two countries examined the cooperation implementation performance drawn at the last 15th meeting, and discussed cooperation measures on agendas a total of 25 including six new items in the fields of fast reactor, nuclear fuel, radioisotopes, and nuclear fusion. At the technical session, experts from the two sides agreed to cooperate in severe accident and radiation emergency preparedness drill, radiation safety and regulation for technology development of sodium cooled fast reactor, advanced nuclear fuel, medical and industrial radioisotopes production and space environment.

In addition, agendas on sodium cooled fast reactor development, reactor revere accident research, radiation technology based space environment support system development, and establishment of ROK-RF joint research center for radiation medicine will be further discussed at the G20 Summit to be held early next month laying a solid foundation for the promotion of nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

The 17th Korea-Russia Nuclear Joint Coordinating Committee is expected to be held in South Korea in second half of 2014. The Committee has been held on an alternating basis from year 1991 in accordance with the agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy concluded on May 28, 1999.
