The 2nd Korea-Japan Information Exchange Meeting on Nuclear Safety Regulation held on May 22
The 2nd Korea-Japan Information Exchange Meeting on Nuclear Safety Regulation was held in Seoul, Korea. The meeting was headed by Kim Young-Shik, Director General of Atomic Energy Bureau, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) and KAWARADA Shinichi, Executive Director for Nuclear Safety, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
At the meeting the two sides exchanged safety regulation information and explored strategy plan on nuclear safety regulation policy, emergency preparedness, environmental radioactivity monitoring, management of radioactive sources, security of radioactive sources and radiation protection issues
The two countries shared the same sentiment on the importance of cooperation on nuclear safety policy and regulation system between Korea and Japan for the sake of Asian region in the era when dynamic changes take place and more countries hope to build nuclear power plants and use radioisotope (RI). |

| Kim Young-Shik said "As the importance and role of nuclear energy have been emphasized amid high oil prices and global warming, safety of nuclear energy has to be assured beforehand." The Korea-Japan information exchange meeting will contribute to advance in Korea's nuclear safety regulation system and serve as the momentum to establish strong cooperation between Korea and Japan on nuclear safety regulation issue. |
| MEST and MEXT signed the cooperation plan on nuclear energy facilities' regional safety and technology information exchange in 2000. This meeting was first started by Japan's suggestion to have discussion on environment monitoring, nuclear energy protection system and nuclear safety regulation strategy. Thereupon, the first meeting was held in Tokay, Japan in 2005. |
